NAVIGATING FROM KILLALOE TO LIMERICK

Before navigating on these waters advance notice should be given to 
the Lock keeper at Ardnacrusha, who controls Parteen lifting bridge and 
Ardnacrusha lock. 

Two main factors can impact on the navigation from Ardnacrusha lock 
to Sarsfield lock. 

1. Water velocity 
Water velocity is influenced by the following factors: rainfall, amount of 
turbines on and tides. 

Check with the Lock keeper at Ardnacrusha for advice on the number 
of turbines in operation. For advice on the tides check with the Lock-
keeper at Sarsfield lock (see phone number below) 

2. Airdraft 
Relevant airdraft gauges are placed upstream and downstream of all 
bridges (see positions on chart). Check airdraft on all bridges before 
passage through bridges. 

NOTE: Always keep to the navigation channel as shown.

Waterways Ireland wishes to advise masters 
and owners that they should NOT undertake 
a passage on the Limerick to Ardnacrusha 
stretch of the Shannon Navigation if the 
output from the Ardnacrusha hydroelectric 
power station is above 20 Megawatts due to 
high flow rates and water turbulence in the 
navigation. 
Note that 20 Megawatts is equivalent to the 
output from one turbine at Ardnacrusha.

this number not be available, or for any other 
information about your passage plan through 
Ardnacrusha Locks then please contact

Masters considering making the passage 
from Killaoe to Limerick are advised to 
obtain a copy of the City Cruising Guide 
from Waterways Ireland for full details of 
the route.

As part of the Blueways Ireland network of multi-
activity trails for paddling, walking and cycling, 
there are defined paddling trails around Lough 
Derg.

There are 13 trail head locations with 21 individual 
shoreline trails around the Lough Derg.

Boaters should be aware of small craft accessing 
the waters at the Blueway Access Points shown, 
and show consideration for paddlers travelling 
along the Blueway trails.
