OPERATION CARD

There are no lock keepers on the waterway but there
are a number of Patrollers with responsibility for
controlling the waterway. They may be contacted in
cases of diﬃculty by telephone on the number shown in
this guide at each lock.
Lock operation cards and tokens may be purchased
from outlets displaying the waterway logo.
Observe the correct procedure when passing your boat
through a lock. The inexperienced should use the
operation system extremely cautiously; nothing should
be done unless the consequences are understood.

Leaving Lock
Leave the lock with your exit gates open.

Diﬃculties
Gates may jam with rubbish under them or fail to open
completely due to rubbish lodging behind them.
Re-opening or closing may help. If in diﬃculty contact
the patrollers on the telephone number shown.

Save our Canal

Erosion of the canal bank is a serious

problem which can be aggravated by

boats going too fast on the narrow

sections of the canal.

Please reduce your speed so that there

is little or no wash behind you. This

generally means a speed of 5kph -

about half your normal driving speed.

When Siren sounds take ﬁnger oﬀ button being operated and press Emergency Stop. Ensure boats are clear of gates and cills, then continue the lock operation as

before.
